A $4.6 Million Irrigation and Water Management Modernization Project to Launch in Karakalpakstan with Japan’s Grant Support

A three-year project aimed at strengthening water resources management and improving climate resilience in the Republic of Karakalpakstan will be implemented from 2026 to 2029. The initiative is funded by a grant from the Government of Japan and will be carried out in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The total value of the project is $4.6 million.

The initiative is designed to improve the efficiency of water resource management, modernize irrigation infrastructure, and enhance conditions for farmers and agricultural enterprises in the Aral Sea region.

As part of the project, irrigation infrastructure will be upgraded, digital monitoring systems will be introduced, and water-saving as well as climate-resilient technologies will be applied. More than 1,000 farmers and agricultural enterprises in the districts of Kegeyli, Chimbay, Karaozak, and Bozatov will gain access to modern solutions.

These measures are expected to increase agricultural productivity, strengthen food security, and enhance the capacity of the water management sector in the region.
